Dripping Tap to Blocked Loo: When to DIY and When to Call a Plumber

We're a heating company, but a surprising amount of our week is plumbing — and honestly, some jobs don't need us. Here's our honest guide.

Usually fine to DIY: bleeding a radiator, tightening a leaking compression joint by a quarter-turn, plunging a slow sink, replacing a tap washer if you're confident turning the water off first, and repressurising your boiler using the filling loop (check your manual).

Call a plumber: anything you can't isolate with a stopcock, leaks inside walls or ceilings, toilets that won't flush or keep running, a stopcock that itself is seized (very common — and the worst time to discover it is mid-flood), replacing taps, basins or sinks, and anything involving your hot water cylinder.

The golden rule: know where your stopcock is before you need it. Go find it now — usually under the kitchen sink — and make sure it turns. That thirty seconds is the cheapest plumbing insurance there is.
