Why Your Boiler Needs an Annual Service (And What Happens If You Skip It)

Why Your Boiler Needs an Annual Service (And What Happens If You Skip It)

Every autumn our phones light up with the same story: a boiler that's been 'fine for years' suddenly dies on the coldest night. In almost every case, the warning signs were there months earlier — and an annual service would have caught them for £85.99.

So what does a proper service involve? We strip the boiler down and clean the burner and heat exchanger, check the flue for safe operation, run a flue gas analysis to confirm clean combustion, test gas pressure and tightness, inspect seals and the condensate trap, and check your system pressure and expansion vessel. It's an 18-point check, and it takes about an hour.

There's a money angle too. A boiler burning cleanly uses less gas — a sooty heat exchanger can quietly add 10% to your bills. Most manufacturers also require annual servicing to keep your warranty valid. Skip the service and a failed part that should have been free suddenly isn't.

And the safety angle is the one that matters most. A faulty boiler can produce carbon monoxide — colourless, odourless, and dangerous. A service includes the combustion checks that catch it. If you remember one thing: book the service before winter, not during it.

Teign Gas services boilers across Exeter, Newton Abbot, Torquay and all of South Devon for a fixed £85.99 — or £105 bundled with your cooker or hob service. Book online in under two minutes.
